The V-Day Google Doodle
Google today pushed the limits of cuteness capable of being packed into a one-minute video. And although we at Portfolio.com do try to avoid using the word cute in any of our articles, this video just demanded an exception.
“The animation alludes to that universality” of love, Michael “Lippy” Lipman, the doodle’s animator, told the Washington Post. “These characters are archetypes, with no dialogue, so it can play around the world.”
Cocreated in three weeks by Bay Area animator Lipman and Google designer Willie Real, the video tells the story of a young boy's failed attempts to woo a rope-jumping girl—in spite of help from his Google search engine—and the secret to finding true love.
Typical of Google marketing, the story quickly expands beyond the local story of a boy and a girl to a message of understanding to all groups of different backgrounds.
Other long-form doodles from Google's past include homage's celebrating the birthdays of Charlie Chaplan, John Lennon, and Freddie Mercury.
