Is There a Card for Foursquare Day?

So, a question: What are you supposed to do on Foursquare day?

Residents of New York and other cities around the world get to find that out this Saturday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg today joined with a growing number of others to declare that April 16 would be a day to honor the site.

At least New York City sort of has a reason to give thanks to the startup that began as sort of a hipster craze before going mainstream. Foursquare, like a number of other social-media startups, was founded in the city, as Bloomberg points out in his proclamation:

Started by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai around Dennis’s kitchen table in the East Village, it now employs more than 60 people in New York and has more than 8 million users worldwide. That is why we are proud to join Foursquare’s founders and fans in celebrating the first global social-media holiday. Today, April 16—4/16, the fourth sixteenth of the year—is Foursquare Day in New York City and around the world.

Of course, Bloomberg and New York aren't the first to recognize 4/16 as Foursquare Day. That honor goes to Tampa, Florida, where a local optometrist and social-media junkie started the event last year.

"As a personal user of Foursquare, I just kind of liked it," Nathan Bonilla-Warford told the Tampa Tribune. "And as a business owner, I realized the opportunity for marketing my practice."
