More Opportunities to Break Into hackNY
HackNY, which matches students up with tech company startups in the Big Apple, will offer more such pairings as its summer fellowship program expands this year.
Co-organized by professors from New York University and Columbia University, the program matches quantitative and computational students with startups and also provides free, New York City-based dormitory housing to its fellows. This year, the program will accept 24 students and place them with area startups, twice the number of participants as last year, TechCrunch reports.
The program also requires startups to pay selected interns at least $400 a week, and asks that participants join in events and attend lectures by technologists, investors, and startup founders. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis from students via the hackNY.org website.
Startups that want to bring on top tech students also have to apply. Participating startups will be determined through a matching process as summer approaches.
Startups that may potentially hire hackNY fellows for summer 2011, according to TechCrunch, include the following: FourSquare, Bit.ly, tumblr, OMGPop, SecondMarket, BuzzFeed, Yipit, Knewton, Hunch, BankSimple, Group.me, HyperPublic and others.

- Flexible, To a Point: President Obama endorses a proposal to allow states to opt out of federal health care reform requirements in 2014, with some conditions.
- It's Raining Risk: Hedging against weather risk is about to become a very big business as investor Vinod Khosla and Google Ventures pump money into WeatherBill, a company which uses advanced technology to help insure farmers against weather-related losses.
- The Sheen Hits the Fan: What's Charlie Sheen's solution to being "out of a job" with a "family to support?" Sue, of course. The "Two and a Half Men" star wants "tons" of money from CBS to cover losses from his show's shortened season.
