Rivalry Game

Google Inc. is reportedly shooting for release of a music service to rival Apple Inc.'s iTunes by Christmas.

Reuters reports the search giant is in talks with music labels on plans for an online store and cloud service that would let users play songs without downloading them onto their devices.

The news service cites unnamed sources who say Google Vice President of Engineering Andy Rubin has been updating music industry leaders about the new music service and has talked about a pre-holiday launch.

Rubin has reportedly been well-received by the music industry which hopes to benefit from a loosening on the grip that Apple now has on Internet sales of their wares.

About 70 percent of all digital music sales now happen on the iTunes Music Store.
