Facebook Ads Gaining on Yahoo
Facebook Inc. is gaining on online advertising rivals Yahoo Inc. and Microsoft Corp.
The social networking company delivered more display ads in the first quarter than Yahoo and Microsoft, according to market-research firm comScore Inc.
The report, however, doesn't include a major source of revenue for Yahoo and Microsoft, banner ads they deliver to other Web sites through their networks.
ComScore shows Facebook.com with 176.3 billion display ads on its Web site in the first quarter, about 16 percent of the total, followed by Yahoo with 131.6 billion and Microsoft with 60.2 billion.
Facebook is still a long ways behind in total revenue from ads, however. The Wall Street Journal cited unnamed sources who said that Facebook earned more than $500 million in revenue in 2009 and is projecting more than $1 billion in 2010. That compares with Yahoo's $6.5 billion in revenue in 2009, mostly from advertising.
