Apple's New Laptops: Not So Exciting, But Boy Are They Kicking Microsoft's Hiney

Kevin Maney writes: Apple has done a phenomenal job taking advantage of Microsoft's horrendous mistakes in the PC market. It's new laptops, introduced today, will continue the trend. But compared to something like the iPhone, does anybody who's not a computer hound get excited by anybody's new laptop anymore?

Apple's new line pushes down the price of an entry-level MacBook to $999. Other new models add some nifty features like the kind of touch controls you find on the iPhone, and the machines are supposedly "greener" than other laptops. None of that is going to cause an orgy of consumer buzz.

However, it does keep Apple firmly in the mix when people shop for computers these days. Microsoft's gunky, slow Vista has turned off a lot of computer users. Apple's marketing has pushed Microsoft into a corner where Windows now seems like the choice of nerdy corporate drones in ill-fitting suits. And the Intel-driven Macs can now be made to run most Windows-based software, mowing down the last barrier to switching. Those are major reasons why Apple has grabbed an amazing 17% of the retail computer market. Add in the Mac's sleek designs, and you've got a winner.
