Enough With the E-mail Goggles Already!

Kevin Maney exclaims: What the ---- is it with this blanket media coverage of Google's "Mail Goggles?" There were nearly 500 stories about it, last I checked on Google News. It was covered in the UK, Australia, Canada, India, and strange foreign lands like Texas.

Right -- there is a global financial and economic crisis going on, and the world's media feels compelled to write about Google's lame project to stop drunken e-mailing. To recap: If you turn on this new drunk-proofing scheme in Gmail, it makes you do a few simple math problems before sending the potentially-regrettable e-mail you just typed to your boss or ex-significant other. The whole thing is more of a young coder's joke than actual attempt at a feature.

Why all the attention? Yeah, it's funny, if you take it that way. And it does hit a nerve: We've all sent regrettable e-mails. If someone can come up with software that really does prevent those, society will be a better place.
