Real Bullets Through Moto Phones

Kevin Maney writes: That photo of a bullet going through a RAZR that accompanies my story titled "Who Shot Motorola" -- that's real.

In this era of Photoshop, when I saw the image I assumed it was essentially photo-art -- a doctored photo illustration of the concept of a cell phone getting shot. But it's way cooler than that. Photographer Kenji Toma actually spent a day blasting bullets through real Moto phones. I'm only sorry he didn't invite me to watch.

I asked how it was done, via e-mail, and heard from Kenji's assistant, who identified himself only as Moe. (These artist types...)

Here's what he wrote:

Yes, we, the prop stylist actually went to a shooting range and got the bullet shot through the phone by an actual gun. Then, we took photographs of the phone with a bullet in still.

Also, we did use the air cannon which shoots a silver ball. We used it to actually break a phone and took photographs in motion to catch breaking pieces by using a trigger system.

By putting the breaking pieces on the back of the phone again and again, we photographed so many exploding phones. More than 30 phones. We had the shoot in our studio all day long, probably more than 12 hours including test shots of the air cannon.

Kenji says that it is always a pleasure as well as an anxiety to create something new.
It is like solving a puzzle. You always feel excited to solve it but at the same time you have this difficulties to overcome. You will solve little by little. Then, when you achieved it, you have a great accomplishment.
