How Hulu Stole the Momentum from Joost

Kevin Maney notes: The latest Wired has a good story about Hulu. More than a year ago, I had lunch with Hulu CEO Jason Kilar while I was reporting a story about Joost -- which was supposed to be the great break-out product of Internet TV. Hulu had just launched -- in fact, it may not yet have been out of private beta. But listening to Kilar, it started to dawn on me that Hulu was the product Joost should've been all along. That feeling got reflected in my Portfolio story, which ended up being about Joost's struggles with a little about Hulu as the up-and-coming threat.

These days, Hulu has grabbed the position as THE go-to site for Internet TV -- even though Hulu is still far from perfect. (Its range of popular programming is still a little slim.) Meanwhile, Joost has moved to solve its biggest problem by creating a browser-based version of its offering, which is at this point only playing catch-up to Hulu.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
