Joost Going To the Browser

Kevin Maney reports: Back in April, in a story I wrote for Portfolio, Joost first revealed that it was going to offer a version of its Internet TV that would play inside a browser. Joost had to make that move, CEO Mike Volpi told me. Competitors like Hulu played in the browser, and forcing consumers to download Joost's software and watch Joost in a separate player was a handicap for the company.

As of today, Joost will play in a browser, though users still have to download a plug-in. Next month, Joost will launch a version that requires no plug-in, although that will show video that's not as high-quality.

All of this should help CBS-backed Joost regain some momentum. After starting out with high expectations and a ton of publicity, Joost got overtaken by Hulu, which is backed by Fox and NBC.
