New Facebook, Whether You Like It or Not

Kevin Maney writes: Gak! Gak! Gugugug!

Pardon me. That's the sound of the Facebook redesign being shoved down my throat.

As of today, most users can no longer opt to use the old Facebook -- we're being forced into the new Facebook. I was one of those people who tried new Facebook for about two days and didn't like it. Hard to say why, although the new version just looks boring to me. Toggled back to the old Facebook. But I have that choice no longer.

While we're on the subject, in my interview last week, Marc Andreessen, who is on Facebook's board, went so far as to call Facebook a very important company. Why? His explanation:

Facebook, I would describe, the reason I'm one of the board is I would describe Facebook as a true, old-fashioned, Silicon Valley company in sort of the best sense of that term.  Like, super technology focused, super product focused, very innovative, much more innovative, I think, than it gets credit for, and very determined to build out a service and an offering that's going to reach a mass market, a very large number of people.  It's not just a quick thing where you're just developing your technology, sell it to the company. Mark Zuckerberg chose to not do that multiple times.

You know it's not just a marketing gimmick.  It's not just a -- it's not like running a big ad campaign.  It's a real, honest-to-God Silicon Valley technology company.  And I think Mark Zuckerberg,  the founder, is extremely determined to build a real company and a big company and an important company.  And he's got sort of a roadmap in his head of like what he wants to do for the next five or ten years that I think is just -- is very striking.  He's very determined to pursue a long-term path.  He's very determined to have the company continue to be very innovative.
