Sony Recalls 440,000 Laptops Due to Overheating Risk

Sam Gustin says: This is not good.

Electronics giant Sony today recalled 440,000 of its Sony Vaio laptops worldwide because of concerns that they could overheat and burn users.

According to an Associated Press report out of Tokyo, Sony has identified the issue in 19 models in the Vaio TZ series, that were manufactured between May 2007 and July 2008. The company has rfeceived 209 reports of overheating worldwide, including seven cases resulting in minor burns.

The United States Product Safey Commission, which is monitoring the domestic portion of Sony's recall -- which affects some 73,000 units -- said in statement: "Irregularly positioned wires near the computer's hinge and/or a dislodged screw inside the hinge can cause a short circuit and overheating. This poses a burn hazard to consumers."

Sony's Vaio recall comes nearly two years after the company was forced to recall some 340,000 rechargeable lithium batteries that powered laptop computers in the U.S., also because of overheating problems.
