So Much For McCain's Online Privacy "Plan"

Blaise Zerega gave up on privacy a long time ago. John McCain today announced his vision for online privacy and digital security. And like many political issues in this campaign, his statement boils down to nothing and may do little to reverse him being viewed in some circles as a Luddite.

Called "Ensuring the Personal Security and Privacy of Americans in the Digital Age," McCain's press release can be summarized as follows: online privacy and security are important. That's about it. Nothing specific. No calls to action. No proposals about new measures to thwart identity theft, international cyberattacks, or  misuse of personal identifying data.

Nonetheless, McCain calls upon government, industry, parents, schools, and children to work togther to "ensure that our technologies can be used safely,
securely and in a manner that protects our citizens and the civil liberties we so cherish.
"

It's a noble goal, of course. Afterall, who could disagree with such a vision? But how to execute and accomplish? Sorry, Senator McCain, but as "remarkable" as the Internet is, coming up with answers will require more than using " a Google."
