First Bytes: Gmail, Apple, Facebook, more....

- Google's web-based email service, Gmail, suffered a major outage Monday afternoon, renewing concerns about the reliability of Web, or "cloud," based services. The company apologized. [GigaOm, Google]

- Meanwhile, Apple continues to have trouble with the e-mail component of MobileMe, its own suite of Web-based services, which has been plagued with problems since its launch last month. [Ars Technica]

- Southern rock pioneer The Allman Brothers Band says it's been "Tied to the Whipping Post" by Universal Music. The band has sued the label for $13 million in unpaid digital royalties. [Paid Content]

- Georgia, the former Soviet republic, has accused Russia of a cyber-attack to coincide with military hostilities. [News.com]

- Facebook is facing a mini-revolt over the site's new design. [All Facebook]
