Zuckerberg's Facebook F8 Keynote Cures Insomnia
Sam Gustin says: You've got to give Mark Zuckerberg some credit. At least the 24-year-old Facebook chief executive is trying to lighten up. During today's F8 Facebook developer conference, he even tried cracking a few jokes. Didja hear the one about the Facebook user in Greenland?
But Facebook fanboys (and girls) looking for a big announcement today will be disappointed. The most widely anticipated announcement -- a Facebook payment system -- was missing in action.
Instead, Zuckerberg focused on the site's redesign, which will allow developers to more deeply integrate their applications into the news feed -- the stream of updates that alert you to what your friends are up to.
Zuck also announced an expansion of Facebook's translation tool, which will allow developers to translate their apps into other languages.
Perhaps the most interesting announcement was new partnerships for Facebook Connect, which allows users to take their profiles with them as they visit other sites around the web. The company announced 24 new partners, including social news site Digg, blogging platform Movable Type, and CitySearch, the dining and nightlife guide.
During certain points in his talk, you could tell that Zuckerberg was trying to channel Apple chief executive Steve Jobs, the master of the tech keynote.
Unfortunately, despite a slick presentation, there just wasn't that much "there" -- there.
Here's the full press release.
