Rocket Racing Debut: So What's That Carbon Footprint?

Kevin Maney equivocates: If I could get to Oshkosh, Wisc., next week -- which would have to start with me looking on a map to see where Oshkosh actually is -- I'd be very excited to see the debut of the long-awaited Rocket Racing League. Even better that the league now has its first sponsor, which would be...well...fashion line DKNY. Somehow it just doesn't feel the same as a good old fashioned Budweiser sponsorship.

The league was founded by Peter Diamandis, the same guy who started the X-Prize. And the idea of little jet planes racing against each other sounds like some cross between the Blue Angels and Quidditch. But what happens when there's a crash?

Anyway, despite the fun, there's a bigger question at stake: Why are we as a society inventing a new sport that burns vast amounts of oil and unleashes vaster amounts of carbon?

Hey, by the way, considering how fast the new Tesla Roadster is, how long before the first electric car races in NASCAR?
