3D At Home? Who Needs Theaters!
Kevin Maney writes: The movie industry is big big BIG on 3D in theaters -- a trend I explored in a story for Portfolio magazine. Now the industry is forming a task force to set a standard so 3D can come to home theaters and TV sets.
This is a bit of a dilemma for Hollywood. It's making 3D movies and pushing theaters to spend tons of money to install 3D equipment so people have a reason to go to the theater instead of waiting for the DVD. As soon as home theaters catch up to that kind of 3D experience -- poof! -- there goes that competitive advantage for theaters.
Although, no one's entirely sure if people really want 3D at home. You'd still have to wear those glasses to get the 3D effect. And unlike in a theater, at home half the time you're doing something else while watching TV, like keeping an eye on a toddler or cooking dinner. The glasses could be a problem.
Oh, but think of what the porn industry could do with that.
Anyway, leave it to Slashdot's audience to detail a bunch of geeky ways you can manage to get 3D on a home system right now...
