Last Bytes: AOL, eBay, Apple, Google

-- Microsoft and Yahoo have intensified discussions with Time Warner about buying AOL. For Jerry Yang, an AOL tie-up may be his last hope to maintain control of Yahoo. Microsoft's Steve Ballmer may buy AOL just to spite Yang. [Reuters, Portfolio.com]

-- Ebay beat Wall Street expectations, posting 20 percent gains in revenue and earnings, respectively. The company attributed much of its growth to PayPal, its online payments system. [NYT]

-- Apple's MobileMe launch last Friday didn't perform much better than the company's disastrous iPhone activation system. Apple apologized, and gave users a 30-day free extension to their service. [MacWorld]

-- Google is set to report earnings tomorrow. Wall Street analysts are expecting the company to post $3.87 billion in revenue and earnings per share of $4.74. [eWeek]
