Firefox Enters Guinness Book of World Records

Sam Gustin gives props to Mozilla for entering the Guinness Book of World Records for the most software downloads in a single day: 8,002,530.

Two weeks ago, Mozilla, the group behind Firefox, released version 3.0 and said it was gunning for the world record. Today, Guinness officially certified the feat.

"As the arbiter and recorder of the world's amazing facts, Guinness World Records is pleased to add Mozilla's achievement to our archives," Gareth Deaves, Guinness' records manager, said in a statement. "Mobilizing over 8 million internet users within 24 hours is an extremely impressive accomplishment and we would like to congratulate the Mozilla community for their hard work and dedication."

Already, Firefox 3.0 has grabbed nearly 5 percent of browser market share -- just two weeks after launch.

As of late Wednesday, nearly 30 million copies of Firefox 3.0 had been downloaded.
