Symbian Sandwich

Russ Mitchell rings in: Symbian, the cell phone operating system maker, ought to be ashamed at how rapidly it was outclassed by Apple's iPhone OS software.

Now, Nokia is buying out other cell phone partners' shares in Symbian. That at least ought to give Symbian better focus, with fewer masters to serve.
But for high-end cell phones and personal communicators, Symbian will still be sandwiched between Apple's closed but relatively lovely system, and Google's upcoming wide-open Android system.
Nokia's focus may be just what Symbian needs. But it's got to produce results: Nokia's own future depends on it.
