Google, China, and Reality of Free Music
While Microsoft and Google square off here in the U.S., the more interesting -- and equally significant -- battle of search giants is Google vs. Baidu in China. The latest tactics involve giving away music.
I wrote a column in 2005 saying that the music model in China basically has to begin with the premise that music is free there, and always will be. Attempting to make the music business in China anything other than that is futile. So while the music companies fight Baidu over free music, Google is wisely trying to cut deals to offer free music to compete with Baidu.
A the column points out, free music has not meant the end of a Chinese music scene. Musicians have, instead, found lots of new ways to make money.
