Content Owners Should Be Doing Cartwheels
Really, what a great time to be an owner of movies and TV shows. That's what I thought when I learned of Apple's announcement yesterday that it will rent movies. In fact, it seems like every week there i another major unveiling of a new company or service aimed at selling and showing video content. CES was jammed with that kind of stuff, from Microsoft's deal with NBC to put the Olympics on line to Internet-ready TVs and cell phones that can get TV broadcasts.
Studios and networks have groused for too long about piracy concerns and business models, not to mention worries that YouTube videos will supplant professional entertainment. The reality is that more entities are more hungry for professional content than ever before. Laws of supply and demand seem to be in favor of content owners and creative types.
