The Tata Car Essay
I wrote an essay for the upcoming February issue of Portfolio magazine about the new $2,500 car from India's Tata Motors. The Portfolio.com site published the story yesterday (while I was on a plane home from CES).
You may wonder why a tech journalist wrote about a car, but actually, I don't think I did write about a car. I wrote about the personal computer. And the Internet. And the Model T. And every other breakthrough that democratized something that had, before that, been un-democratized. The Tata seems to fit a familiar pattern, and if true, GM and Toyota might want to study the histories of IBM and Digital Equipment.
