What's the Use of Partnerships Like This?

You get a lot of this kind of stuff in tech and at CES in particular: announcements of meaningless partnerships that seem to do little but generate press coverage.

Panasonic and Google announced they are going to develop a TV that can display Internet content. Now, if Panasonic wants to make an Internet TV, why would it make one that is tailored to Google? People want an open Internet TV, not a Google TV. And if Google wants to get its content on TV sets, why would it bother working with just one of the dozens of global TV manufacturers?

By the way, Intel announced a new chip specifically designed to allow new TVs to pull in Internet content, so we'll probably see a lot of Internet TVs in the coming couple of years.
