Finally, the Olympics the Web Way

It has taken ages to get here: Microsoft last night announced that it will partner with NBC Universal to show "3,000 hours of live and on-demand events." This will be the first time the Olympics take advantage of the ability of the Web to deliver niche events to niche audiences. NBC will never broadcast on TV preliminary synchronized swimming competitions or early-round women's soccer games between Poland and Nigeria. But for fans of those sports, the Web should be a way to see them -- and skip the flowery treacle that accompanies the big network Olympics broadcasts.
