Parallels, the Company
I've been following Parallels since it first unveiled its mainstream, desktop virtualization software -- only about 18 months ago, before most people paid any attention at all to virtualization. Now virtualization -- which lets you run multiple operating systems on a computer -- is about the hottest thing in software.
Parallels had been a little outfit owned by an otherwise minor tech congolemerator called SWsoft. But with Parallels, SWsoft hit paydirt, and today SWsoft said it will change its company name to Parallels. Om Malik posits that it's a prelude to an IPO.
All in all, the fascinating thing about Parallels is that as it goes more mainstream, it increasingly makes it irrelevant which computer you buy. If you own a bunch of Windows-based software, no reason still be locked into a Windows-based machine. With Parallels, you can get a Mac and run your old software inside a virtual version of Windows. More than ever, the best hardware and best operating system can win.
