Facebook: Down With 'Is'!!!
Finally, a Facebook Group I can actually get behind. It is the "Petition to Get Rid of 'Is' from Facebook Status Update" group. (See it here if you're on Facebook.) And, in fact, the group (which has about 180,000 members) is getting excited about the possibility that its pressure tactics are working.
If you're not on Facebook, one of its most popular features is the "Status Update" -- a little blurb that lets you broadcast to all your friends what you happen to be doing or thinking. The only problem is that the box in which you can type your update is set up to automatically start with the words, "Your Name is..." So, for instance, I'd have to make mine say, "Kevin Maney is wanting to play hockey," which certainly is an affront to anyone who got past sixth-grade English.
So, Facebook, get rid of the restricting "is" and let the creativity bloom.
