Steve Jobs' Delusion
Apple's Mac sales are up -- in fact, doing better than the rest of the PC market. And CEO Steve Jobs is saying that it's because the Mac and its OS are so good.
Well, the Mac and its OS are excellent indeed -- but they aren't the reason the Mac is luring more and more former Windows users, sending the Mac's sales zooming. Instead, Apple is getting tremendous help from two outside sources.
One is a company called Parallels. Once Apple decided to use Intel chips in the Mac, Parallels was able to make virtualization software that allows a Mac to seamlessly run Windows and, thus, any Windows application, whether Excel or a big corporate enterprise software system. This means that Windows users can choose to buy a Mac -- they're not stuck with the usual Dell or ThinkPad.
Which leads to the second outside force helping Apple: Lots and lots and lots of people can't stand Vista, the latest incarnation of Windows. Faced with buying a new computer with Vista or jumping to a Mac with Parallels, more and more people are choosing the latter.
That's not to dis the Mac -- just to say that Jobs and Apple got a lot of help from outsiders...
