Touch Screen Phones: Ya Think?

Sprint Nextel says it will bring out a touch screen phone, a la the iPhone, and other carriers are jumping on the bandwagon. But in an interview last week, Motorola CEO Ed Zander said he doesn't think much of touch-screen phones. Moto and other handset makers sell them in Asia, but when tried in the U.S. market, they've never really caught on. The main problem: Americans like to send texts and emails on their phones, and touch-screen typing with big American fingers is nearly impossible. Anyone who's tried doing email on their iPhone will attest.

My bet: Touch screen phones will be a niche for the foreseeable future.
