Open Avatars: This Is Huge

A lot of very smart tech people believe that eventually the virtual world type of navigation will replace the browser as most people's window on the Web. If that's going to happen, the most important next step is for individual avatars to be based on an open standard. That way, your avatar can wander into any virtual world and maintain its characteristics. It also would mean that every Web site -- Amazon, Facebook, eBay, Hillary's campaign site -- could make one virtual-world interface, instead of building separate sites inside Second Life or other worlds.

Anyway, IBM and Second Life, with support from the likes of Google, are officially pushing the concept. Root for this to take hold, though from the feedback on Slashdot, there are a lot of skeptics.
