High-def DVDs: It' a Fidelity Problem

The consumer electronics industry continues to moan about consumers' hum-drum attitude toward next-generation DVDs -- the competing HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats. A new report says the things won't catch on for another 18 months.

Or maybe never. High-def DVDs have a fidelity/convenience problem. To most consumers, the new DVDs don't offer that much better fidelity than the regular DVD format. And the new ones are less convenient -- because they cost more, are harder to find, and require a new DVD player, not to mention the looming danger of one format or the other becoming the Betamax of DVDs and disappearing. So HD-DVD and Blu-ray wind up in a no-man's land where consumers have little compelling reason to buy them. No wonder they're not catching on.
