Screens, Not Sounds, Are the Problem While Driving

California is close to creating a law that bans drivers under 18 from using cell phones -- even with hands-free ear devices -- and PDAs and laptops. Now, it's pretty hard to argue against a ban on using a laptop while driving. It's obvious that you don't want anyone, much less an inexperienced driver, looking at a screen while zooming down a highway. But listening to a phone call in your ear is a whole other category. It seems that if you're going to ban voice calls, logic would dictate banning listening to music, too.

Maybe, instead of singling out particular devices, legislators should think about banning screens, not sounds.

(Granted you need to look at a screen to dial a cell phone -- but you have to look at a display to find a radio station, too.)
