Facebook, and What Is a Friend?

Interesting little essay today on Micropersuasion about the changing nature of how we define friends, now that social networking sites allow us to say we're "friends" with hundreds of people at a time.

It also raises one of those funny little points that requires input from an Internet Age version of Miss Manners. That being: What do you do on Facebook when people you don't really know -- but don't want to offend -- ask to be your friend? Apparently, the act of outright turning them down is called a Faceslam. And I often find I can't quite do that. But I also don't want to say yes. So I, too, leave them in Facebook purgatory, without a confirmation or a slam. So what does one do?
