Big Doings Among the PC Giants

With H-P and Dell duking it out for the No.1 position in the global PC market, it's been very important to Lenovo to hold down the third spot and try to grow from there. Lenovo is No.1 in Asia, weak in Europe and so-so in the U.S., where it sells entirely to business users through what had been the IBM PC division before Lenovo bought it in 2005.

Today, Lenovo's strategy is getting a kick in the gut. Its Taiwanese arch-rival, Acer, has agreed to buy Gateway for $710 million. It's enough to push Acer to No.3 and get in Lenovo's way in Europe. At this early stage, seems like a smart chess move on Acer's part.
