A gPhone? Much Smoke, No Fire Yet
It's so funny -- there has not yet been any reason to truly believe that Google is about to come out with a phone that would compete against Apple's iPhone. In fact, it seems unlikely that Google would enter into a cut-throat hardware business so far removed from its culture and expertise. (Though stranger things have been known to happen. There is a Disney phone, after all.)
Anyway, early this morning, an Indian newspaper, Business Standard, published an anonymous-source story saying that Google is two weeks away from a "worldwide launch" of a Google Phone. Faster than you could search for pics of Cameron Diaz in a bikini (not that we ever have), media outlets around the globe picked up or elaborated on the story, including TechCrunch.
However, the Business2.com blog does a nice job debunking the whole thing as a ridiculous rumor.
The truth? Perhaps somewhere in between...
