Xerox Invents Greener Paper

Just got an email from Xerox, which ultimately has an interest in making sure people continue to use paper for a long time to come. Like, it would bad for a document technology company if environmental concerns started to convince Americans to cut way back on the 1 trillion pieces of paper they use in digital printers annually.

So Xerox announced today that it has developed a "green" paper that's made without the chemical processing of almost all other paper. "It uses half as many trees as traditional paper, is manufactured with less water and chemicals, and is made in a mill using hydroelectricity, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent," says Xerox spokesman Bill McKee. "Plus, because it's lighter than paper made by the traditional chemical process, it costs less to ship and mail."

Xerox has been working on this so-called "mechanical paper" for two decades, and only now has been able to perfect it.
