Desktop PCs: Going the Way of the Men's Hat?

Interesting discussion on Slashdot about whether the desktop computer is on its way to becoming an anachronism, like the men's hat or the phone booth. Laptop sales keep soaring while desktops are flaccid.

Last month, Lenovo CEO Bill Amelio told me that Lenovo is not at all giving up on the desktop. "In the worldwide market, it's still almost 50-50," he said about the split between laptops and desktops. In emerging markets, desktops -- which tend to be cheaper -- still rule. In mature markets, 90% of growth is laptops, he said. Lenovo plays in both markets, and plans to be heavily into desktops for years.
