Broadcast.com: Way Ahead Just 9 Years Ago
I just ran across Mark Cuban's post about the ninth anniversary of Broadcast.com. It really took me back. I remember visiting Broadcast.com pre-IPO, I think within a few days of its first attempt to broadcast a Victoria's Secret fashion show. The company was still reeling from the demand to see the show, which crashed Broadcast.com's servers. I interviewed both Cuban and his co-founder, Todd Wagner, and wrote a story for USA Today (which is so old, it's not on line).
It's really pretty amazing how Broadcast.com was so far ahead of the Net video craze. In April 1999, Yahoo bought the company for $5.7 billion -- which, you might say, should have put Yahoo way ahead of the Net video craze. But Yahoo apparently messed that up, because these days nobody is really uttering "Yahoo" and "video" in the same breath.
