Cold Stone Technology, circa 1940

Having a little Fourth of July break in Upstate New York -- today on the shores of Seneca Lake. About halfway up the western side is a little ice cream shop that belonged to the Wixson family for generations. It has one of the most unusual, 1940s-era ice cream makers -- one of four still in existence, the owner says. It's called "Choose a Treat," and it it makes a Cold Stone-like mixture. The server drop a vanilla brick of ice cream in the bottom, then adds items like chocolate chips or cookie bits. The drill-like apparatus drops down and mixes it all together, pushing out a soft-serve cone. wixson%20machine.jpg. □
