And Then, On the Border, We'd Need a Virtual Tijuana
IBM has embraced the idea that Second Life-type virtual worlds will be the Internet of the future -- the way everybody does everything on line. And now it's thrown an interesting proposal on the table: that a "passport" system be set up so your avatar can go from one virtual world to another, looking the same and maintaining its characteristics and possessions.
Hardly anyone who works with virtual worlds -- not even Second Life founder Philip Rosedale -- believes that there will eventually be a single virtual world. More likely, many will evolve, but they will have to be interconnected in some way.
