Rush Hour: An Explosion in the Gulf and Another in the Market
Today's hot business topics, boiled down to a couple of arbitrary quotes, comments, and tweets:
On the explosion today of a Mariner Energy oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, west of BP's Deepwater Horizon, forcing the rescue of 13 workers:
"President Obama had right policy, by expressing that we need to freeze any oil exploration in deep water for six months until we review all safety and issues. But Republican and particularly Gov. Bobby Jindal was against that. this shows another pre-mature, nonsense talking by Republican and especially Bobby Jindal. We do know what is going happen next. We need to slow down oil exploration until we understand all safety issues. We can not put people's lives in danger as well as have another disaster." —mattdfw, commenting at CNN.
"That's socialism. We Americans have the right to swim knee deep in oil." —rt06, commenting at CNN.
On pending home sales rising 5.2 percent in July from downwardly revised levels in June, helping boost stock prices:
"It's amazing the "Spin" they put on things, and how fast the economy recovers from just last week with pending home sales down 27%. " —loanguy 1, commenting at MarketWatch.
"This is a better surge than the one's in Iraq and Afghanistan. Come on, Americans, let's show some confidence in ourselves." —jimc-1929288, commenting at MSNBC.
On a court ruling that says "ladies nights" at bars don't discriminate, in a case brought by a self-described anti-feminist:
"As a feminist myself, I think this is a bad ruling. I am opposed to "Ladies Nights" at clubs:
1. It's unequal treatment based on gender by a public business, unless they also have a corresponding "Men's Night."
2. It supports the notion that women somehow can't pay their own way.
3. The men who attend ladies night assume that...since the women are there enjoying cheap or free drinks...we ought to "pay" for it by not complaining over guys hitting on us all night long.
I hope this stupid ruling gets overturned." —superlib87, commenting at The Daily Beast.
"You sound like you need Happy Hour." —prettyscary1, commenting at The Daily Beast.
