Sony Pictures Classic Reels One In

Sony Pictures Classics' Tom Bernard finally made a kill at Sundance. Yesterday he closed a deal to acquire Courtney Hunt's immigrant drama Frozen River, paying in the low to mid six figures.

Just yesterday Bernard said that Frozen River was on his wish list. That's good, because he got beat out by Paramount Vantage for American Teen, a funny and touching documentary about the inner workings of high school.

Film Sales Company paid an undisclosed sum for Derek, a documentary on the life of independent filmmaker Derek Jarman. It is narrated by his friend Tilda Swinton, a best supporting actress nominee for her role in Michael Clayton.

Elsewhere at Sundance, Palm Pictures bought the North American rights to Paul Taylor's We Are Together, a documentary about a successful singing group started by a group of orphans in Africa. Terms were not disclosed.
