Oscar Nominations Are Out. Will There Be a Ceremony?
There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men led the race for Oscars, earning eight nominations for the 80th annual Academy Awards. Michael Clayton and Atonement were close behind, with seven nominations apiece, Christine Lenzo writes.
All four pictures were among the five nominees for Best Picture, as was the quirky coming of age movie Juno. The nominations were announced this morning in Los Angeles by actress Kathy Bates and Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences president Sid Ganis.

Cate Blanchett was nominated for both Best Actress, for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and for Best Supporting Actress, for her work in I'm Not There. Also nominated for Best Actress were Julie Christie for Away from Her, Marion Cotillard, for La Vie en Rose, Laura Linney for Savages, and Ellen Page for Juno.
Best Actor nominees are George Clooney for Michael Clayton, Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood, Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd, Viggo Mortensen for Eastern Promises, and Tommy Lee Jones in In the Valley of Elah.
In the director's category, Julian Schnabel was nominated for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the story of Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby's life after suffering a catastrophic stroke. Other best director nominees include Tony Gilroy for Michael Clayton, Jason Reitman for Juno, Joel and Ethan Coen for No Country for Old Men and Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood.
Rataouille received three nominations: Best Original Score, Best Animated Film of the Year, and Best Original Screenplay, which means it could be a good year for Disney at the Oscars.
The Oscar Awards are scheduled for February 24 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. Jon Stewart is slated to host, but with the writer's strike going full steam, the awards ceremony could share the fate of the Golden Globes and be presented as a press conference.
