Another Nail in Torture Porn's Coffin
And you thought Hostel II was a dud. Captivity made an estimated $1.5 million this weekend in 1,050 theaters this weekend, coming in 12th place. I think we can officially say that torture porn is dead, or at least, it's dead theatrically and future offerings will now be relegated to straight-to-DVD. But what does this mean for horror movies in general? Well, the genre is certainly still viable. MGM's 1408 cleared another $5 million this weekend, bringing its total to $62 million. For upcoming horror flicks (like Rob Zombie's Halloween remake), I would expect the studio to play up the psychological/thriller elements when marketing the movie and downplay the splatter and gore.
