"Sex and the City" Ladies: Too Old for a Movie?
Take a second and ponder that question. It's one that's been asked on several blogs, reacting to news yesterday that New Line finally has a start date this fall for a Sex and the City movie. I guess it's a viable one, especially if you're looking at the project through the youth-obsessed lense of Hollywood. But here's my question: if this was a good idea two years ago (when Kim Cattrall's deal hung up the movie) then why wouldn't it still be a good idea now? Do two years really make that much difference? The show's been doing pretty well for TBS in syndication. It's not like fans have forgotten the series. But what remains to be seen is how they plan to update the story for the big screen (what works for a half-hour soap style episode is very, very different from what makes two-hour movie memorable...and it's not like TV shows have the best track records when adapted into movies). Over the six seasons, the show matured with the women. If it wants to reconnect with fans, the movie will have to do the same. And I don't think that has anything to do with the age of its stars.
