Not all Bad News for HBO: Fight Night Pulls Nice Purse
Chairman/CEO Chris Albrecht may be on the ropes, but HBO is still packing a punch when it comes to viewers, scoring a record 2.15 million pay-per-view buys of Saturday's bout where Floyd Mayweather beat Oscar De La Hoya in a 12-round split decision for the junior-middleweight title, Variety reports. The previous record was 1997's heavyweight fight between an ear-nibbling Mike Tyson and Evan Holyfield, which counted just under two million buys for Showtime. Saturday's fight had the pay-per-view price of $54.95 and grossed $118 million for HBO. The pay cabler and the boxing world have to be pleased with these numbers because they suggest that viewers still care about professional pugilism--there had been a lot of talk in the national sports media about boxing's appeal eroding because of the rise in popularity of mixed martial arts/ultimate fighting. And if you're wondering, De La Hoya reportedly took home $45 million for his efforts. Mayweather made $20 million. For those of you who were too cheap to pony up the cash to watch the bout last weekend, HBO will replay it this Saturday (5/12). Or you can just wait for the rematch.
