12 Nations Make Piracy "Priority Watch List"

Sony's Spider-Man 3 hits theaters in China today. But yesterday, the US Trade Representative (USTR) placed the nation, as well as 11 others including Russia, on a "priority watch list" that will put them under extra scrutiny for "failing to protect adequately producers of copyrighted, patented and trademarked material, such as movies, music and pharmaceuticals." The list came as part of the annual "Special 301 Report" named for the section of US trade law that it covers. The US has already reported China to the World Trade Organization over alleged unfair trade practices. The MPAA estimates that Hollywood has lost about $2.3 billion in revenue in 2005 due to piracy, and that only 10 percent of DVDs sold there were legal. In addition to China and Russia, the other nations on the priority list: Argentina, Chile, Egypt, India, Israel, Lebanon, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine and Venezuela.
