DVD Sales Down But Overall Optimism Up

The bad news: During the first quarter this year, homevideo spending took its biggest dive of the DVD era, slipping 5.1% to $5.6 billion in the period, according to Video Business research. Sales were down 7.8% to $3.5 billion, while rental was off 1% at $2.1 billion. The good news: Studio executives blamed the first quarter blues on a bad slate of movies and predict year-to-year growth in the homevideo market because of the huge summer slate that will make its way to disc by year's end.
