Weak Demand Leads to Weak Hiring
Uncertainty about government policy isn’t slowing down business hiring, but weak demand is.
Of 51 respondents to a Wall Street Journal survey of economists, 65 percent said lack of demand was the main reason employers aren’t hiring. Twenty-seven said it had more to do with businesspeople being uncertain of government policy.
With economic indicators fluctuating from month to month, it’s difficult for business owners to feel confident enough to hire, said a business owner spoken to by the Journal.
The economists also surveyed by the Journal had revised down their forecasts for the second half of the year, although they expected joblessness to continue to trend down.
