Boeing's Bold Projection

The Boeing Co. on Thursday forecasted that the North American market for commercial airplanes will be worth $700 billion during the next 20 years.

Boeing projects the market will take delivery of about 7,200 new airplanes—from all manufacturers—by 2029.

“North America is a large, mature market, and we expect passenger traffic for the region to grow at a modest rate of 3.4 percent,” Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said in a news release. “The fast-paced lifestyles in Canada and the U.S. require rapid, frequent and reliable coast-to-coast and interregional transportation. Driven by this demand, nearly three-quarters of the new deliveries over the next 20 years will be single-aisle airplanes.”

Boeing predicts single-aisle aircraft to comprise 71 percent of the North American fleet by 2029. That’s up from 56 percent now.
